The Orphan Train

In the 1850s, Boston and New York City had a strange and unattractive problem—thousands of homeless street children. Some of the children were orphans. Many were just neglected children. All were suffering the hardships of hunger, cold, fear and victimization. This problem persisted for many years, until a few farsighted social workers realized something needed to be done. They started to build orphanages. But they couldn’t keep up with the demand. And so the Orphan Train was born.
